Nov 11, 2009 What Kind of Business Should You Start or Buy?

I often am asked the question, “What kind of business should I start or buy?”  Here’s what I have to say about it.  When working with our clients on small business coaching, it’s essential to make this critical decision.

    Good Stuff! BUT…

Cliff, I think you can actually take it a step further. Actually TWO steps…

What you are passionate about is just one facet of the Delta!

The two others are (in no particular order):

What you are good at… I MEAN REALLY GOOD AT. In a room of 100 people, what are you #1 … Numero Uno! (Jim Collins ring a bell?)

Then lastly, IS THERE a MARKET FOR IT?

I am passionate about Buggy Whips. Just so happens that in a room of 100 people, I am the best at making buggy whips (or contracting some place in China to build them faster and cheaper)

    Problem is …

I am 87 years too late!!!! (They just don’t work on my Camry.)

Great input Jim. We appreciate your help in the community here. Think of all the job creation that will occur if we can keep starting, funding, marketing and growing successful businesses.

I have this recurring dream were we live in a world in which everyone is doing what they love and what they happen to be very good at and they are getting paid to do it because they do it well and no one else can do it quite like them. They live comfortably, have good health insurance and their kids enjoy good schools. Yes, it is the capitalist’s dream, but really… How far fetched is this? REALLY? Whatever your answer is… you’re right! Just remember that you had a choice. No one chooses for you but YOU! ANd noooo it’s never too late, you are never too sick or too old… So, what’s it gonna be?

    • Cliff Jones says:

The dream you’re describing is your and my reality. You make many good points. Most of which people don’t want to hear. Because it would require taking ownership of our lives. Facing fears. Taking risks. Working to make a difference. Give something back. The fiber of our forefathers. Which has sadly eroded. Google the Cycle of Democracy and comment on that! Now there’s a wake up call if I ever saw one.
