Online Marketing A Mystery to Many Small Business Owners

Contract Marketing Officer Focuses On Online Marketing

One of the biggest and most costly mistakes I see business owners make is blowing it with online marketing. Whether it has to do with a poorly planned website, lack of traffic, not tracking data and results, not measuring ROI, the bottom line is small business owners are generally not experts when it comes to online marketing, lead generation, website design, programming, content development, copywriting, video production, editing, etc.

But most small business owners are in a bind because they typically can’t afford a full-time marketing director who brings valuable experience with online marketing to the table. Marketing directors and chief marketing officers who are any good at what they do easily command six-figure comp plans. And there’s no way most small business owners can pay themselves that kind of money let alone pay a marketing expert.

One of the most challenging and rewarding engagements we offer clients is that of "Contract Chief Internet Marketing Officer." This service enables any business owner who is truly committed to successful online marketing efforts to easily afford the talents of a Fortune 1000, very senior, online marketing executive who focuses specifically helping you, the owner, get better results with your online marketing.

The simple truth is most small business owners don’t have the time, experience or skill to lead the marketing and sales efforts of a small business. For example, we see too many business owners trying to run their own Google AdWords accounts and campaigns. It’s ridiculous how much money and time these people are usually wasting. They would have to spend thousands of hours, years, working to scratch the surface of the talent a full-time, Google-certified professional.

Small business owners and professionals who are not completely marketing and sales focused are doomed in today’s economy. If a small business owner has any chance at all they have got to harness the knowledge and expertise of an online marketing executive, hire someone or learn the business on top of his or her own business.

Here’s the bottom line. Your website is your most valuable marketing tool. Sadly, most business owners have no online marketing plan or strategy, no goals for the website, no measure or tracking of results, no lead generation, no content development, no Google Analytics installed, no Keyword strategy, no competition analysis, no monthly maintenance agreement, no SEO, no link building, and so on.

Right now billions of people are online 24/7 searching for information, products and services. Who will find your website? Will they give you permission to market to them? Will they buy from you or your competition? Is it possible to lower your cost of acquiring a new client or customer?

The entire Internet is all based on search. When people search for what you sell will they find you and choose to do business with you? The key is being found, marketing with education and enrolling people to like, trust and do business with you over and over. We live this each and every day. We help clients in all industries. We help clients market globally. We get results you can measure!

If you’re one of millions of small business owners out there who has no clue about online marketing you have three choices…

1. Ignore the Internet and eventually get a day job.

2. Hire a Chief Internet Marketing Officer as a consultant to help you.

3. Scour the market, interview, hire, train and manage a full-time or part-time employee. (Or your step kid’s best high school buddy. Ouch.)

Look, if it’s not you, then somebody in your company needs to spearhead and lead your online marketing efforts. They ideally will give you a comprehensive and integrated, online and offline marketing plan that they will help you and your team manage and execute. If you or someone on your team is not an experienced Internet marketer focused on your business goals with you (unlike most website designers, programmers, ad agency or creative person.)

So if you’re ready to take your online marketing, lead generation and ecommerce business to the next level, maybe it’s time you consider engaging a Contract Chief Internet Marketing Officer. If you are interested in talking with us about our services reach us by email, web form or telephone and we’ll discuss how affordable our services are. We always welcome feedback here on the WealthNet Partners blog. What has your experience been as a business owner with online marketing? Are you doing it all yourself? Do you have employees who take care of it for you? Are you pleased with the results if you’re tracking results?

One Response to Timely Solution Helps Small Business Owners with Online Marketing Results

  1. Jerry, thanks for sharing your point of view. I am sorry to hear of your experience. It is quite common though. There’s a theory that says we attract what we are. There’s an ancient Hawaiian healing art revealed in the book Zero Limits. One of the points in the book supports the attraction thing by saying whatever shows up in our lives we must be 100% responsible for. That has been a big shift for me personally because I too used to deal with expectations. And I was often disappointed. Then I began dealing in agreements with my wife, kids, employees, etc. Wow. What a difference.

The bottom line Jerry is you, I and every business owner would be hard pressed to ever feel like we’re getting 100% out of an employee or subcontractor. It’s one of the Seven Pillars of Profit I write about. Human capital. Which ties to another pillar named Leadership. And the responsibility on us is to keep trying. Whether it’s marketing, sales, finance, technology, or any other realm of the business.

I am sure your Mastermind group would challenge your point here to help you shift to a more positive light. You may actually be way more positive than you came across in your post here. I hope you see my comments only in the most positive light. Cliff.
