I was asked the other day why WealthNet has recently begun developing Websites for customers? Considering we’ve been working as business development consultants since 2002 I felt it is a fair question.
Here’s why I have been working the last several months to build a team of Website design, Search Engine Optimization and Marketing experts. Results. As a business development consultant, Internet marketing has always been an integral aspect of growing our business and that of our customers. Over the years I sourced many Website and Internet marketing projects to various people. I also worked with each client’s respective professionals in this regard and noticed a variety of results, some better than others. What got very frustrating though was not being able to drive the entire process.
This is what I mean. When I meet a business owner for the first time and ask them what they want, they almost always say, “More business. Yesterday.” Then I ask them to get their business plan and discuss it with me. Ooooooooops. Imagine that. There is almost always no written plan. So writing either an internal strategic plan or external business plan would be priority number one for us and the customer. Then we could focus on sales and marketing objectives within the context of the overall business plan.
While working through this process, various projects would need to happen. Top grading people and recruiting talent. Dealing with policies and procedures. Managing accounting and finance issues, etc. So while we would ultimately work toward sales and marketing objectives, many various projects would need to happen first depending on the customer.
When it came to Websites, the bottom line is I got sick and tired of sites that didn’t fit the business plan. Existing sites were often completely inadequate. Poor designs. No conversion mechanism. No metrics. No tracking and so on. If a customer is planning to grow sales they needed Websites and related marketing to leverage the Internet. Why? To generate more leads, close more sales (conversions) and drive the top line to grow the business in a high ROI and cost effective way.
So I decided to build my own team which is what I’ve been doing for the last couple of months. To reflect our new capabilities and positioning, we’re in the process of rebuilding the WealthNet site. This should be done in the next few weeks. Many related objectives are a part of this plan which unfolds on a daily basis. Like our customers, we too adopt the growth process of “See. Plan. Do. Learn.” We too focus more of our energy and budget on Internet marketing. (Blog much?)
The bottom line is we want our Website and our customer’s Websites to get better results. We want to generate more leads. We want to close more sales. And we want to grow our business as well as those of our customers by effectively leveraging the Internet. Most importantly, I wanted to take charge of the process and build a team that I can hold accountable directly.
